Porpoises in Wilhelmshaven

Whales in Wilhelmshaven? Incredible, but true! 

Every year, porpoises come to the Jade Bay in spring. Wilhelmshaven celebrated this natural spectacle with the seventh Wilhelmshaven Porpoise Days which took place from 8th to 15th of April 2023. During this time, visitors can observe the marine mammals at a boat trip or at the Südstrand up close

 

 

Why do porpoises come to Wilhelmshaven

 

In spring, there is a lot of food for the harbor porpoise at the Jade Bay. To keep its body temperature at 37 degrees, it has to eat all dayHarbor porpoises can eat up to 500 fish per hour. To do this during the day and night, it sleeps a maximum of two hours. 

Facts about porpoises:

– Harbor porpoises belong to the toothed whale family

– They live up to ten years in the North Sea

– They perceive their surroundings with sounds: they send out clicks and receive echos

– They come to the surface 2 to 4 times a minute to breathe

– They grow to a maximum of 1.80 meters – females are usually larger than males

 They weigh between 50 and 80 kilograms

– They are not very sociable 

– There are about 15,000 harbor porpoises on the coast of Lower Saxony – only about 10 of them come to the Jade Bay
